History Humans likely entered Seattle 4,000 years ago. Englishman George Vancouver mapped it in the 1790s, and white settlers arrived in 1851. Arthur A. Denny settled Alki Point, and the area was named Seattle after Chief Si’ahl. Seattle became a city in 1869. The Klondike Gold Rush in 1903 spurred development. Boeing and the 1962 World’s Fair revitalized the economy, followed by Microsoft, Amazon, and others. Today, Seattle is a major economic hub with over four million people.
Culture Seattle is multicultural, with a significant Asian community. Known for its LGBT community, Capitol Hill hosts annual Pride events. The “Seattle Freeze” describes residents’ polite but reserved nature.
Climate Seattle’s summers are dry and warm, with temperatures in the 70s to 90s. From late October to early March, skies are often overcast with drizzle. Winters are moderated by marine air, resulting in rain rather than snow.

Music Seattle’s music scene includes grunge, folk, and jazz. KEXP radio promotes local and alternative music, launching careers of artists like Nirvana and Macklemore.
